Battery Operated Portable Digital TV/DVD Players
BATTERY OPERATED PORTABLE TV - GREAT FOR POWER OUTAGE- HURRICANES - CAMPING
At first blush, a TV does not sound like an essential for hurricane survival, but when the power goes off this becomes an important source of information.
When Hurricane Ike hit the Houston area, the power outage was widespread and lengthy. In my neighborhood (Sugar Land), the power was off for eight days. During that time, two tiny old portable TVs provided current status of the disaster. Many gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. were closed. I was able to find out where I could find gas and where I could find ice for my cooler. Ice was in short supply along with everything else. After Ike, digital television took over and the old portables no longer worked.
I recently added the Philips Portable TV/DVD Player. Because we seem to have frequent power outages (without a hurricane), I have learned that having the ability to play DVDs is worth the extra money. The Philips 7" Portable DVD Player PET729 includes a Remote Control, AC Power Adapter, Car Adapter, AV Cable, and Antenna. It also has a one year warranty.
My first digital portable TV was the Axion (see below). The Axion is still in use but I have added the Philips TV/DVD player.

BENEFITS OF A PORTABLE TV
Living in an area prone to tropical storms and hurricanes, I quickly learned the importance of a portable TV. After Hurricane Ike, I had no power for eight days and that was considered good! The TV stations provided 24 hour coverage. The city was in turmoil and it was important to find gas, food and other essentials. A reliable battery operated portable TV keeps you informed.
We also experience tropical storms and thunder storms that knock the power out. So, not only can you watch the news, you can have some entertainment during the outage.
Of course, it’s also great to have a portable TV on camping trips. Prices have come down so much in the last year, these TVs are affordable. I found the best buys online at Amazon.
THE AXION 7" PORTABLE TV
The Axion Digital Portable TV was the first one I purchased. It's still working fine but I recently splurged on the Philips 7" Portable TV/DVD Player (see the review above). I've learned that when the power goes out for an extended time, boredom takes over. I wanted the ability to watch DVDs as well as stay updated on weather conditions.
The search for a new digital portable TV led to the discovery that many options are now available. After lots of research and after reading numerous reviews for various portable TVs, I settled on the Axion 7" Portable TV. The first decision in the purchase process was determining how and where the TV would be used. For me, the Axion Portable TV was part of updating my hurricane survival kit.
The Axion Portable TV includes a built-in tuner and built-in antenna. You can enjoy a crisp picture and good color. The Axion 7" Portable TV package includes an AC adaptor, remote control, an external antenna, car adapter and A/V cables. This portable TV would be great on a long car trip or on a camping trip. Priced under $100, the Axion 7" Portable TV is a great value.

YES, YOU NEED A PORTABLE DIGITAL TV
For anyone living in an area prone to power outages, a portable TV is a life saver. Hurricanes and tropical storms frequently leave us in the dark in Houston, Galveston and surrounding cities. These natural disasters often require evacuation and this critical information is transmitted by television. During Hurricane Ike, TV was the source of information for open stores and restaurants, gas availability and where precious ice could be found. So, in these situations you definitely need a portable TV.
Campers also find new digital portable TV a great addition to the camping gear. It can keep restless kids occupied while mom and dad get the campfires going. Campers can stay updated on important news events or weather developments. These little TVs are also wonderful on long car trips. The portable TV with DVD or VCR built-in is an excellent choice for car trips and camping trips with children.
If you have someone living in a dorm room, the Axion 7" Portable TV is perfect. Dorm rooms are small and space becomes precious. This great little TV can be moved around, taken to the beach or on a camping trip and back home to the dorm.
